A Thermostat that Saves you Money

Today we’re proud to present this article from our guest poster, Jillian Dohack, who is a short-sale home specialist at a local title company in Fort Myers. ~Larry.

My husband and I recently bought a new home and during that process we spent way too much time at Lowes. During one of our many trips we came across this amazing product, called the Nest. Now, we can’t imagine our home without it.

The Nest Learning Thermostat

This product looks like something from the future!  This thermostat is not an ordinary thermostat, it is a learning thermostat. It solves problems through a battery of sensors and algorithms. It can figure out when you’re home and when you’re not, and based on your adjustments, it can build a model of temperatures to your liking.

It uses all this information to create a temperature schedule that’s personalized to your lifestyle, one that keeps you comfortable while saving energy. Considering that thermostats control half of a typical home’s energy bill, the Nest promises to be more than a great product. If thermostats like it took off, it could significantly cut down on our nation’s energy use.

We have found so much value in this product that we love to share our experience with everyone who owns a home and likes cost savings. It is the perfect thermostat for snow birds or anyone who travels or rents their home.

As mentioned above, the primary advantages over other thermostats is its ability to analyze your behavior and then form an energy saving schedule to control your HVAC.

But what I find even more valuable especially for snow birds or travelers is having the ability to check the temperature in your home while you are away. For example, if you have been away for 6 months and you are returning, you can turn your air to your desired temperature prior to arriving so you can be comfortable upon your arrival.

I also appreciate the peace of mind that comes with knowing if my air conditioner breaks, I’ll be notified instantly and avoid many possible issues.

Here is a list of some of the features:

Estimates time for desired comfort level

While it’s actively heating or cooling, Nest displays an estimated time for the system to reach the desired temperature.

Optimum energy saving features

Nest displays a green leaf any time the thermostat is running at energy-saving settings. This can teach you to make energy-saving decisions.

For example, if Nest has learned that you typically run your AC until the house is 74ºF (23.3ºC), you could turn up the temperature until you see the green leaf, perhaps at 76ºF (24.4ºC), to save energy. The leaf will always appear at cooling settings of 84ºF (28.9ºC) or higher and heating settings of 62ºF (16.7ºC) or lower.

Display of energy saving activities

Nest lets you know what activity (between Auto-Away, your own adjustments and the weather) resulted in the greatest energy savings throughout the day.

Connects to your wireless network

Nest uses WiFi to connect to your Nest account at nest.com. This feature allows you to monitor and adjust the Nest remotely from the Web site.

Remote access from your smart phone

Nest supports a mobile app available for Apple iOS devices (iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad) and Android devices. The app turns your mobile device into a remote control for your Nest.

Build a Nest network

You can add Nest to any number of thermostats in a multi-thermostat building. They will work alongside other thermostats, but note that each of Nest’s energy-saving features only apply to the rooms in its sensor range and to the HVAC components it controls.

If you are anything like me you love to be aware of any new products on the market for your home, especially ones that provide peace of mind and cost savings.
