If you aren’t regularly changing your filter, you can be in for trouble. When warm air from the inside of your home flows across the coils of your a/c, it grows colder, but also warms the coils in the process. If this warm air isn’t flowing properly, the coil will get colder… and colder… and colder. The condensation, which is normally a liquid, will begin to turn to ice.

The same problem can happen if your coil is extremely dirty or your refrigerant is leaking. Other things that will cause ice buildup in your system:
