which can be downloaded from our free eBook library.

It is usually in your best interest to spend a little extra up front on a high-efficiency unit. While it may cost more initially, ultimately…

…the unit will pay for itself (and then some) with the money you’ll save on your electric bill.

Your air conditioning contractor can help you determine the payback period for a high-efficiency unit versus a standard lower-efficiency unit.

Energy efficiency is determined by the following:

  • Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) – Used for rating central air conditioning efficiency. The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio rates how many BTUs an air conditioning unit will remove for each watt of electricity consumed. The higher the SEER, the less you spend on operating costs. Federal law mandates a minimum SEER of 13 for all new air conditioning units.
  • Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) – This is a thermal efficiency measure of combustion equipment like furnaces, boilers, and water heaters. AFUE figures out how much heat a unit delivers for every dollar spent on fuel. The higher the AFUE, the lower your heating bills.
  • Tonnage – An air conditioning ton equals 12,000 BTUs per hour. That means a three-ton air conditioner can remove about 36,000 BTUs of heat per hour from your home.
  • HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor) – This is a measure of average annual heating efficiency of a heat pump. FPL recommends a minimum HSPF of 6.8.
